How to get paid as a freelancer

If only getting paid as a freelancer were as simple as sending out an invoice then sitting back waiting for the money to roll in.

If only getting paid as a freelancer were as simple as sending out an invoice then sitting back waiting for the money to roll in.

Unfortunately it doesn’t always work that way.

Most freelancers and small business owners find following up on unpaid invoices an arduous task.

It can be frustrating and take up a lot of time especially when you have bills to pay and other work commitments to focus on.

When it does work out it can give you a high and extra boost of motivation but usually when the stresses of money interfere it can take that high away instantly.

Here’s some useful tips that can be beneficial when it comes to getting paid and prevent further time wasting with future clients.

  1.  Always get a deposit.

Getting a deposit is a great way to filter out time wasters. If people have to pay a deposit generally they will commit to the project. Asking for 50% upfront is a good starting point.

Never start a project until you’re paid because unfortunately there are those who will back out and then you’ve gone and wasted valuable time that could have been spent on something else.

  1. Don’t be afraid to say no.

You don’t have to accept every project that comes your way.

Know what your business is about and who you want to associate yourself with.

Turning down work can be difficult as we all like getting paid.

However if you think certain clients are going to be difficult and not appreciate what you do, then this should be a red flag.

In the long run turning them down could be the best thing for your business. Otherwise it can be damaging and use up more time and energy than you had anticipated.

  1. Don’t sell yourself short.

One of the worst things you can do as a freelancer is sell yourself short. An example of this would be undercharging.

When you start out it can be tempting to bend your prices as you’re happy enough to get paid anything.

By doing this you could end up working yourself into the ground and not ever making a profit.

You could also attract clients that don’t value or respect your work.

Instead stay firm and explain the process to clients.

Value yourself first then others will.

  1. Good Communications.

Having good communications with a client is key.

Make yourself available when possible. That doesn’t mean 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Set work times and make your hours of work visible on your website and social media.

Reply to emails and offer to arrange meetings.

It’s important to tell clients the process from the beginning so that there’s no confusion halfway through.

Discuss the project, pricing, timeline etc. Both parties should always signing a contract.

Good communications from the start will lead to efficient workflow, better understanding of what the client wants and also get you paid on time.
